Mudbound Topic #1- Characters

Well, our reading was supposed to start last Saturday, the 15th, so I figure we can start blogging a little. I've talked to everyone, at we are all at different places in the books, including our speed reader Amanda Marshall who has already finished the book!! :) So, keeping in mind that we all are in different places, I thought we could at least start an initial chat on some of the characters mentioned in the first couple of chapters. I for one am enjoying this book, but I could be biased since I picked it out. :) I like the author's style. The character that I have connected with the most is Laura. She seems so simple, but the more I read the more I see the strength she has, especially when it comes to accepting the challenges she is faced with. She seems to get bolder as time goes on. Also, the more I read the more I realize how lucky we are to all have husbands that we are equal in decision making with! :) I don't know if I could ever be very submissive. So, let me know what you all think about Laura, and/or the character that is most intriguing to you. As we get further into our reading we'll discuss more in depth, but I thought this would be a good initial topic until we all get more into the book. I am leaving tomorrow for Ohio and will be there until next Thursday, so let's chat on this topic for a week and when I get back I will post a more nitty-gritty topic! :) Enjoy reading!!

First discusser to discuss... I rule.

Honestly, I don't know who I relate to. I am fascinated by pretty much all of the characters, but it's sort of like observing from the outside. I can't really relate to the whole submitting to your husband's will thing :), or the share cropping thing, or the post traumatic stress thing, or the adultery thing, or the racism thing... yeah, but it's all really intriguing.

I agree with Amanda ... it's hard to pick a character to relate to. I guess I could say that I relate to Laura by trying not to create too many waves but as I read the book (yes I did finish it finally) I think that I relate most to Henry, besides the whole sex situation - I usually light two candles ... haha- just kidding. Anyway the way that I related to him was I think that I am pretty simple. Things do seems black and white. You keep the commandments, you'll be happy, no matter what storms may come your way. I feel a very strong responsibility to be the leader of my siblings and be the "responsible" one in my family. Henry seems naive, but really, he knows whats going on. He senses his wifes emotions, although he might not always respond to them. I am like this many times. I don't know how to respond to someone when they are going through hard times. I usually don't know what to say or do, so I typically avoid the situation and/or conversation. Luckily for me though, my husband is still in love with me and not my sister ... or am I just being naive too?

sorry Meg, I hope I didn't disclose too much info in my post ... I just assumed you had already finished the book. Stupid postal service!
